Lymphedema Treatment

The treatment plan for lymphedema is based upon individual needs and medical necessity. The Vodder technique is a non-invasive approach called Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT).  Each session is approximately 1 - 1 1/2 hours. The number of days and duration of the treatment is dependent on the patients condition.

Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) consists of:
  • Manual Lymph Drainage - a hands of technique involving light rhythmic pressure to redirect lymph fluid.  MLD promotes a decrease in swelling and increase in skin mobility
  • Compression Bandaging short stretch bandages are applied to increase the tissue pressure of a swollen extremity and prevent the re-accumulation of lymph fluid.  Bandaging follows each MLD session.
  • Remedial Exercises - exercises are performed with the bankdages in place to increase lymph vessel activity and improve lymph circulation.
  • Skin Care - care of skin and nails eliminates bacterial and fungal growth, decreasing the chance of infections.
  • Garment Fitting - upon completion of the course of the treatment and when the limb is closer to normal size, the patient is custom-fit for a compression garment.
  • Self-care - Patients are educated in all stages of Complete Decongestive Therapy in order to maintain treatment at home. It is recommended patients schedule follow up visits at six month interval.
